Before we begin, I’ll warn you straight up – this video goes for an hour and a half. So maybe don’t start it in your lunch break or watch it on mobile data!
The reason I am posting this video is this:
When I was getting back into bass playing after a five-year hiatus, I was hitting a glass ceiling. Everything I already knew wasn’t helping me get my old chops back, and no amount of scales and arpeggios was making any difference. I knew I needed some deeper instruction, some new exercises to improve my playing, but I didn’t know where to turn.
I can’t remember how I stumbled across this gem, but I have been using these simple, user-friendly exercises ever since, and they have improved my playing beyond recognition. I watch it on a regular basis, generally if I’m feeling a little too pleased with my current skill level, and it inspires me all over again.
It’s also a fascinating insight into Jaco’s personal philosophies on how to become a great bass player, along with the story of how he came to be a bass player and why he switched from upright to electric (hint – it’s not why you might think). He also gives us his take on the old fretted VS fretless fracas.
This is a treasure trove of bass instruction. It was aimed at already accomplished bass players who want to take their playing to the next level by locking down their technique. I can tell you from personal experience – it sure does that!
This is as close as you will ever get to having a bass lesson with Jaco Pastorius, and it’s one of the best bass lessons you will ever have. So grab your bass, settle in, and prepare to learn from one of the all-time greats!
